4th Prize. International Competition Monumento Bicentenario Cortes Cadiz (Spain)

ESCEduardo Mayoral won the 4th Prize in this International Competition in Cadiz (Spain)

The aim of the proposal is to generate a visible element from the sea and city interior , improve the quality of the existing public space and reveal key information about 1812 Constitution and Cadiz Cortes.

We substitute the existing pavement in Plaza de España with a recycled material with a lighting system , conforming texts, that shows information about Cadiz history.

This text is connected by illuminated lines according to their subject. In addition to this surface we propose a beam of light, as a new landmark, a new gate of the city, having a visual presence from the railway station, from the sea, and from the urban fabric. A number of facilities are also provided as a wi-fi connection point. Information and freedom, elements that commemorate the constitutional values of 1812 and project Cadiz to the future.

ESC wins competition for a public space in Mula (Spain) – ESC gana un concurso de un espacio publico en Mula (España)

The scheme reintegrates the currently fenced “Glorieta  Juan Carlos I” into the surrounding urban fabric, returning the space to the community by creating a public promenade that breaks the rigidity of the previous configuration and establishes a direct connection between the city and the heart of the square, while preserving the entirety of the existing vegetation.

The main circulations are carved into the current levels of the square, revealing a dynamic pattern that runs through the space among the programmed activity islands that host children, elderly and performance spaces, and allowing a stepless access to the square from the adjacent streets.

The space planning of the square has been generated with custom software that implements a Voronoi algorithm to subdivide the space into circulations and activity areas. This interactive application will allow for a public consultation process that will give the users the opportunity to actively participate in the design process by proposing their own options. Each of the user’s proposals will be the reflection of the individual’s perception of the space and his personal approach to the new design.

The scheme is designed as a self-sufficient, carbon neutral space. A series of climate control units will be scattered through the square, equipped with PV cells, lighting and fog systems that will lower the temperature of the square in Summer, while producing all the energy required for the normal functioning of the space, being at the same time a physical reminder of a continuous compromise with the environment.

Of course this is “ELEMENTAL “

Elemental is a Do Tank affiliated to the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and COPEC, its focus is the design and implementation of urban p01rojects of social interest and public impact. ELEMENTAL is based in three principles:

A. To think, design and build better neighborhoods, housing and the necessary urban infrastructure to promote social development and overcome the circle of poverty and inequity of our cities;

B. In order to trigger a relevant qualitative leap-forward, our projects must be built under the same market and policy conditions than any other, working to achieve “more with the same”.

C. By quality we understand projects whose design guarantees incremental value and returns on investment over time, in order to stop considering it a mere “social expense”.

In this spirit, ELEMENTAL contributes to improve the quality of life in Chilean cities, providing state of the art architecture and engineering, understanding the city as an unlimited resource to build social equity.

Elemental’s Director Alejandro Aravena made a  presentation “ LSE London centred on the Quinta Monroy housing development in Iquique, northern Chile. Starting from the economic realities of government subsidies for low to middle income housing, the architect’s task was described as a simple one: achieving as much as you could for the meagre amount available. Showing the norm (a grim 25sq m house in the middle of a moderately sized plot), the architect identified the main problem as the fact that the box is soon mobbed by a chaos of extensions, irrevocably giving the area the appearance (and reputation) of a shanty town.

Aravena’s solution is to build “half a house” of more adequate dimensions for the same money, leaving the precisely described gaps within which the remainder could be completed through self-build. The resultant terraces of densely packed concrete framed buildings are then feasible on more centrally located (and therefore costly) land. This allows low-cost housing to remain within denser cities, rather than enforcing permanent exile and the tyranny of the long commute that is the reality in many South American cities. It is not completely new as an idea, but compellingly described: the architectural resolution of a financial problem.

Improvisation on a digital space

IDS_ArduinoCode-generated space makes possible to define architectures whose configuration can be controlled by all sort  of parameters such as pressure, sound and lighting levels. In this video, a performer interacts with the space through light sensors and resistors making it evolve with the music in real time.
This project has been developed with Processing, and Arduino, being the first used for the visualisations and the latter for the physical interface.
